ABSALON 2021

[EN] Absalon is a performance realised in Lyon, France, on the 7th of May, 2021. Utilizing the form of abstract dance, with movements inspired by French sign language, this piece visually explores the internal struggle of one fighting against her inner demons. The minimalist clarinet music was composed by Sylvain Manet. Fighting with demons was for a long time treated as a masculine endeavour in art and literature, perhaps most notably in the stories of the Bible. In this performance, the inner demons are more prosaic, the fighting making reference to intimate thoughts one cannot confess, to hidden desires and deceived aspirations springing from the gap between an ideal self-image and the objectivation of the traces of the self. The title makes reference to Absalon, the ambiguous and complex Biblical character split between ambivalent and contradictory impulses, who would then become a symbol of revolt. This performance is also an homage to the Israeli artist Absalon (Meir Eshel), and to his video Bataille (1993), in which one sees the artist hitting an invisible enemy. Absalon is an ongoing project, and it was initiated at the MAPRAA Lyon in June 2020.

[FR] Absalon est une performance réalisée à Lyon le 7 mai 2021. Abordant le thème de la lutte avec les démons intérieurs, cette performance prend la forme d’une danse abstraite aux mouvements inspirés par la langue des signes française. Elle est accompagnée d’une composition minimaliste du musicien Sylvain Manet. Si le combat avec des démons a longtemps été l’apanage des hommes, que l’on pense par exemple aux histoires bibliques, il s’agit ici de démons intérieurs dans un versant plus prosaïque, avec des luttes faisant référence aux pensées intimes peu avouables, aux désirs et aux aspirations déçues qui émergent de l’écart entre l’image idéale de soi et l’objectivation des traces de soi. Le titre fait référence au personnage biblique ambigu et complexe d’Absalon, qui est partagé entre des impulsions contradictoires, et qui est devenu un symbole de révolte. Cette performance est aussi un hommage à l’artiste israélien Absalon (Meir Eshel) et à sa vidéo Bataille (1993), dans laquelle on voit l’artiste en train de réaliser une boxe grossière contre un adversaire invisible. Absalon est un projet qui a été initié en juin 2020 à la MAPRAA Lyon, et sera joué une fois par an durant une période indeterminée.
